Happy Halloween!

One cannot visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in Atlanta, Georgia, during Fall and not bag some pics from their Scarecrow Display. There were several exhibits I wanted to check out at the botanical gardens before they closed for Fall. All throughout the gardens there were all types of creepy and scary Scarecrows. The Serpent Lady was oh so busy keeping a handle on her slithering friends.

Let's face it, this guy is definitely a different kind of Scarecrow, but seriously, it's Halloween so doesn't that rule apply, anythings goes.

What a Hag! I admit her dress and tights are a serious hoot, but you still better watch out as she's keeping an eye on you with her binoculars.

It wouldn't be a Scarecrow Display without a Skeleton or two. This bony guy is really a cool looking dude. Perhaps its the wide brimmed hat that does it. I don't know, but he is. Someone should offer up a free meal and perhaps a facial and manicure would help. Everyone far and wide, in the States and wherever you celebrate this Hallowed Day have fun and stay safe. Dem Bones, Dem Bones

Just in case you didn't know where that infamous Halloween holiday originated from, here's a little back story I thought I would share.

Halloween is celebrated each year on October 31. 

It's roots haled from aged European traditions originating from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. 

People would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts.
In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III deemed November 1, as a time to honor all saints. 

It was later declared All Saints Day and incorporated into some of the traditions of Samhain. 

The evening before was known as All Hallow's Eve, which we now celebrate as Halloween.

Halloween today is a day long activity for some with trick-or-treating and carving jack-o-lanterns. 

Around the world, as days grow shorter and nights colder, 

we usher in the season with parties, costumes and even a few spooks.

Here's a few scary creatures I photographed at past Halloween parties back home in Louisville. Starting off slow, here's the head of a large skeleton figure displayed in a front yard.

Now I've never seen a pirate skeleton until I happened on this guy hanging off a house in a rope cage. Interesting!

This guy has seen better days! And it appears he got caught up in a cob web before he got caught up in a rope hang. EEK! These last two characters are a tad bit more scary. So, if you're a scardy cat then, STOP. Don't go any further.

Is it me or does this guy have really, really long fingers and awfully large hands?

If this guy were in a fashion show, he'd win the prize for best cape. Just so you know, I have a whole slue of creepy photos, and I mean seriously creepy creatures, and some sinister ones, too. If you wish me to post them, however, you must ask, as I didn't want to creep you guys out. Meanwhile, maybe I'll get home for Halloween and shoot some more pics. Provided the weather is nice and I actually can work it into my schedule. Take care. BOO! ARG!

Fall Color Preview

Fall is my all time favorite season of the year, devoid of all the holiday hustle and bustle. Yet, it brings pumpkins, pumpkins, and more pumpkins. Apple cider and hayrides, and pumpkin patches and corn mazes, and haunted houses too. We decorate our humble abodes with pumpkins and squash, hay bales and corn stalks, and pine cones and acorns. Right in the midst of the fever pitch, comes Halloween with ghosts and goblins and hooligans too. That one special night brings us ugly witches with scary spells, hairy pirates with long black swords, and fire breathing dragons and demons and more. 

Just when you think the season is nie, Thanksgiving arrives. The leaves have fallen, heaped high on the curb. The air has turned to a crispier chill. It's Thanksgiving Day with a feast to thrill. Turkey and dressing and casseroles galore. Pumpkin pie just so sweet and hot mugs of cider, what a treat. Fall, how I love thee. 

These images are from Fall's past taken throughout Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. From along the scenic byways, deep within the wildlife refuge and forest, and high up on the mountains. Fall will soon be upon us. ENJOY! 

Fall Equinox

Fall weather is here in Kentucky, not to mention the leaves are showing signs of turning colors.
Pumpkins are showing up everywhere and fall decorations are adorning all of the gift shops.

Can warm bonfires on cold Fall evenings, pumpkins picked fresh from the patch,
hayrides bouncing you all over the rickety old wagon
and corn mazes twisting and turning you to and fro be far behind. 

Soon September will give way to October.

OCTOBER BRINGS . . .

wicked witches with tall black hats and swishy black brooms,

black cats darting in front of you on a lonely country road,

skeletons legs dangling from a creaky old rocker, 

ghosts, ghouls and goblins whizzing by, eekk,

and big black spiders weaving huge sticky webs on the corner of the porch.

Jack O Lantern Spectacular, Louisville, KY

Just a little photo I took from the Jack O Lantern Spectacular held at Iroquois Park in south Louisville tonight. The Spectacular features an art show like setting with a quarter mile of illuminated jack o lanterns. More than 5,000 jack o lanterns are lit up along a path with large feature pumpkins displayed throughout the walk. Countries such as Asia, the Carribbean, Italy, Ireland and many others were featured. The last section before the end of the walk featured the University of Louisville basketball team with Rick Pitino. And right at the end was a section on United States Presidents. But my favorite of the entire walk just might be this lion. Isn't he magnificent? ENJOY!

Have a 'trick or treat' evening my pretties! DON'T FRET OR FRIGHT. I'll be busy handing out candies to all of those good little kiddies whilst . . .

. . . Booing and Hissing and Swishing to and fro on my witches broom, flying from bat cave to cemetery grave searching for all of those evil ghosts and goblins. To be sure, I'll be stirring my witches brew and picking my long crooked witches nose too. Happy Halloween to Everyone! Actually, I'll be at my sisters enjoying in the annual frivolity and fun that is this Halloween night. ENJOY!

'Twas the Night Before

Just a little something I put together last Halloween that I thought perhaps I should share again. Needless to say, the all powerful and wonderful Picnic software is no longer alive so I can't do some totally cool thing like this without a whole lot more effort.

I wish for each and every one of you lots of candy corn and chocolate bars, brightly lit carved pumpkins, kids trick or treating in colorful costumes, and some grownups too, and perhaps even a few ghosts and goblins too for this All Hallowed's Eve! ENJOY!

Getting Your Scare On

A few weeks ago while visiting Nashville, Indiana, and the lovely shops there, I noticed several had displays all decked out for Halloween featuring various ghoulish characters. So I thought I'd post one to help you "Get Your Scare On." I know usually kiddos are the ones who get to dress up, but if you have a chance, perhaps you should be a kid again and dress up for All Hallowed's Eve while handing out candy to the tricksters. After all we're all still just kids at heart. ENJOY!

Graveyard Haunt!

Halloween is behind us but before I move on I wanted to share a pic of the graveyard at my sister's house. My brother in law, Robbie, adds ghouls and goblins every year to his yard of creatures. I especially liked his graveyard rendition. After dark the ghouls rise and light up with spooky music. It was a hoot. The weather was fantastic with temps in the 60's yesterday and 50's early in the evening. The trick or treaters were out in force. Hope your Halloween was great! I'm feeling nostalgic as Spring, Summer and Fall are quickly moving us into Winter, so I conjured up a nostalgic header for your viewing pleasure. ENJOY!

The Old Mill Area, Pigeon Forge

A Quaint Arts & Crafts Village in Brown County, Indiana

I traveled to southcentral Indiana today to visit a truly unique little arts and crafts village called Nashville. It's about an hour north of Louisville, just a few minutes off of I-65. With the temperatures in the 60's and 70's today, so totally not the typical August weather for Louisville, it was a great day to get out of town. Nashville is a very small town but has a huge variety of shops. As I walked the village I took a few photos of the storefronts and, of course, some of the flowers along the walkways. Three or four times a year I visit Nashville to shop but mostly to get away from the everyday. I hope you enjoy the pics I took with my digital camera. I think I might actually be getting the hang of the macro function. Enjoy!
