Field of Dreams

As the warm months of Summer approach,
I dream of long Summer nights, the hot sun sets low in the sky.
A soft breeze cools the warm night air.

As I drive down the dusty country road,
fields of corn sway in the late day breeze,
insects flit in and out of the rows in earnest.

The last light of the day falls below the horizon.
The sky turns a pale pink hue as another day draws to a close.
ENJOY!

Vintage Barn, Lebanon

A drive out to the countryside is always special when you happen upon one of these iconic 'Mail Pouch' barns as I did Saturday outside Lebanon, Tennessee. With the weather warm and a bit of sunshine before the clouds and rain moved in from the South, I decided a drive was in order. Lebanon is a small town just east of Nashville. I happened upon this barn as I was making my way back to the main road. These logo'd barns are numerous especially throughout Kentucky and Tennessee.

By the way, did you know this is a 'monitor' barn meaning the roof is raised in the center. I wasn't sure what style it was so I looked it up. There's quite a few styles of barns which I am sure we all realize in our travels.

I don't know about you, but I am eagerly awaiting the first sprouts of Spring. I envision Daffodils or "Daffys" as some folks call them, and Crocus and Dogwood blooms, and Tulips in bright orange and purple and pink. And even better, Easter is in a few weeks too. Are you getting your "bunny" on? ENJOY!

Sheepish

A herd of sheep were grazing at one of the horse farms in Midway, Kentucky, several weeks ago as I drove my usual route.

I love photographing farm animals. For the most part they are slow moving which makes for cooperative photography. The Easter Holiday is upon us. Ready or not. The past few days have gradually grown warmer and the sun has found its way back to the Bluegrass State. Sorry I've been remiss in posting this week. Looming deadlines if you haven't guessed already. I've been busily putting the Derby/Mother's Day issue to bed (that's printing speak for . . . gone to the printer). Not to worry, that deadline will soon be a distant memory and perhaps I can get outdoors. ENJOY!

The Farmhouse, Blackacre Nature Preserve

As it turned out, I had an hour to kill one afternoon recently, and found myself in the vicinity of Blackacre Nature Preserve. I decided a visit was in order so I stopped in at Blackacre to take a brief walk to Jackson's Pond. Before my walk, I took a few images of the beautiful old farmhouse which stands as the centerpiece for the preserve and everything that surrounds it.
I've always loved this old farmhouse. Part of its charm, I believe, has everything to do with the reminder of days gone by.
The preserve is still called 'home' to cows, horses and a large family of goats. The old barn that sits behind the farmhouse is filled with old rusted farm implements. But the most endearing part of the preserve to me is the old farmhouse itself. And yesterday it was beautiful as it stood blanketed in yellow and red, as Fall paid its annual visit.
Normally, I spend this weekend each year on my Fall pilgrimage to the Smokies. This year I decided to stay home and photograph Fall in and around Kentucky and Indiana. And Blackacre being so conveniently located to my home is a perfect place to visit. It's utterly peaceful and so tranquil that you find yourself asking why you don't visit more often. ENJOY!

Old Fashioned Barn Charm

As I drove the byway this Sunday, I looked over and saw this barn sitting far off in the distance with the beautiful quilted barn art painted on the side. It just had such a pastoral, charming feeling about it that I just had to share. Unfortunately, the corn field in front of the barn probably won't yield any corn due to the drought. I feel so bad for the farmers across America. I'm sure I'll feel equally as bad this winter for everyone else when the price of food goes up. Seems as though America can't catch a break. Hope your week is going well. We're over the hump. ENJOY!
