Cornucopia

Today, I just need to say. I'm a Derby City girl who moved to Music City. I am from the Bluegrass State and now reside in the Volunteer State.

I used to photograph Kentucky and Indiana. Now I photograph Kentucky and Tennessee. Today I share a cornucopia of images I captured in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, to herald a new season approaching. Fall is coming.

Tis the season for all things pumpkin, pine cone and acorn. Go crazy with witches and brews and spider webs too. ENJOY!

Fall Collage

After taking a look back at Fall through my archives filled with images from Bernheim, Blackacre, Cherokee, Mustatatuck, Horsebend Bend, and well, anywhere else I may have stopped to take a pic, these colors kept repeating themselves.
So I decided it was only appropriate to play around with these colors in 'picmonkey' to have some Friday 'Fun'. Fall took me everywhere this year. Where did Fall take you? I'd really like to know. Have a fabulous weekend. ENJOY!

Fall at the Lake, Cherokee Park

Unparalleled beauty comes to mind when I stood and photographed this scene. Every now and then you have an opportunity to make a quick stop during a busy day with only a few moments to spare.
Several weeks ago, with Fall color at peak, I made a quick detour as I passed the Lake at Cherokee Park near downtown Louisville. As I walked across the lawn to the lake I discovered this scene. Awestruck, I captured several images of the beautiful Fall color along the lake. After transferring the images to my computer that evening, I made my way through the images and stopped at this one. I tweaked the color just a bit and . . . Beauty. ENJOY!

Painted Turtles, Cherokee Park

Turtle love. As it were, this was the perfect image to show you just how 'cool' the 'comic book' texture on Picasa's software, or any software for that matter, can take your photo and make it something, well, comical.
Have a fantastic weekend. ENJOY!

Fall, Cherokee Park

While out today running various appointments, I found myself accidentally cutting through Cherokee Park to get from one destination to the next. Such was the scene today over by the lake which sits adjacent to the golf course.
The sun was almost directly overhead, as it was midday, and while it was really bright, I decided it was still worth taking a few quick pics anyway.
The turtles were soaking up the warm sunshine, and while several of them headed for the water as I got a little too close, these two turtles weren't the least bit camera shy. Lucky me. I love the reds and oranges of the leaves reflected in the water.
Farther down looking across the lake the trees were so gorgeous blanketed in orange. I couldn't get the cattails out of the image so after taking a look see in my software I decided I liked them in the foreground. It kind of added a nice touch to the shot. Hope your week is going well. We've rounded the bend. The weekend is a hop, skip and a jump away. ENJOY!

Spring Wildflowers, Cherokee Park, Louisville, Kentucky

Yes, there is a park in Louisville I seldom get to. It's Cherokee Park which is one of the most beautiful Olmsted Parks located here in Louisville. It actually is in my territory I frequent nearly every day of the week, however, I don't always have time to stop. After I finished up today, I decided a quick trip through the park was needed. I hadn't visited Cherokee Park this early in Spring that I can recall. And what I found was magical. Beautiful yellow carpets of wildflowers everywhere you looked. It was like being on a magic carpet ride. ENJOY!

Painting the Lake!

There is no other way to describe this first photo but to say it reminds me of a Currier & Ives print. I photographed this image of the lake in Cherokee Park during a recent snow storm. These two guys were painting the frozen lake and snow covered park. I was photographing them painting. The temps that day were hovering in the low 20's. I got out of my car and walked about an eighth of a mile to one side of the lake to photograph these guys. It was way too cold to linger, but I was adamant about getting a few photos. It's not often you see someone painting a landscape in Louisville. I'm sure these guys were wondering where I was going until they saw my camera. While there was very very little light on this particular day, I feel like that added to some of the Currier & Ives feel. Amazing how some things remind us of times gone past. ENJOY!

Scenic Beargrass Creek, Cherokee Park!

Scenic Beargrass Creek. This beautiful part of the creek is located in the heart of Cherokee Park, which is an Olmsted Park. Frederick Law Olmsted, is the "Father of American Landscape Architecture".

Cherokee Park is one of the Flagship Parks designed by Mr. Olmsted "to be a place where one could experience scenery and take in the refreshment offered by the landscape. It is characterized by long winding roads opening to beautiful vistas, and large open spaces set in the valley of Beargrass Creek. The gently rolling slopes extending uphill from the creek were shaped from pasture lands to contain individual shade trees and tree groves. Woodland areas were incorporated into the design and edge plantings were added to soften the transition from open space to woodland."

Olmsted also planned various parkways throughout greater Louisville which would lead to several of the planned parks throughout the city. Today these parkways are known as Algonquin, Cherokee, Eastern, Northwestern, Southern and Southwestern Parkways. Eastern Parkway leads right up to the main entrance of Cherokee Park although on this particular day I drove in from the southeast side of the park.

On a personal note, the day I took this photograph I attempted to drive through the icy treacherous park. However, I was forced to turn around and return the way I drove in least I suffer the peril of getting stuck and having to be towed out of the park. Cherokee is quite hilly. So . . . I turned around on a one way street and went the wrong way back the way I came in, knowing full well I was going the wrong way. I also knew I probably wouldn't encounter any cars as this part of the park was treacherous. I encountered one car and got around him easily enough. However, I did manage to take this beautiful image before I left this area of the park. The things we do for photography.

After making my way out of the treacherous portion of Cherokee, I drove around the park on Lexington Road and pulled into an area where the lake and golf course reside. And what to my amazement do I find, these two artists honing their craft whilst the lake was almost completely covered in ice.

We did not get the snow we were predicted last night and I, for one, am elated. I must say that I am beginning to come out of this creeping crud I've had for over a week now. However, one last trip to the drugstore for cough drops and cough syrup is probably going to be in order. Have a wonderful weekend. ENJOY!
