Wildflower Meadow, Early Fall

Come take a walk with me as I meander my way slowly through the wildflower meadow that sits just inside the main entrance to Bernheim. It's still early in Fall, but who knows what we'll find.

Would you look at those beautiful tall grasses, such gorgeous browns and yellows. Don't you just love Fall?

Do you see what I see? It's a flock of Cedar Waxwings. This is a Life List bird for me if you can believe it. Hard to believe, but I've never seen one before. And not only do I see one for the first time, but I also get a photograph.

Now I see why the Cedar Waxwings are hanging out in the wildflower meadow . . . Crab Apple berries. Red, ripe and ready for the feasting.

Would you look at that? It's not only the Cedar Waxwings that are attracted to the Crab Apple berries, but there's a flock of Blue Grosbeaks flitting about too. And this one looks to be a female. Isn't she beautiful?

It appears some of the wildflowers along the edge of the meadow are still hanging on as though they can't quite let go of Summer. They'll figure it out soon enough.

Well, do you see what I see now? A second flock of Blue Grosbeaks. Those Crap Apple berries must be delicious. Did I mention that's a second Life List bird for me today.

We're almost around the circumference of the meadow and look what I see . . . a gorgeous Yellow Sulphur Butterfly flitting about the wildflowers. I need to pause here to mention that this image in particular is my favorite from my walk. The background and colors are so beautiful and the subtle color of the Sulphur is just perfect.

Well, our walk has come to an end, but look what I saw when I turned around for one last glance . . . the tall grasses touched by Fall's cool nights have turned gorgeous browns and golds. And a few more wildflowers whose days are surely numbered are hanging on. Such a beautiful time of year to take a walk around the wildflower meadow. I loved every moment of it. Did you? Have a fabulous weekend. There's to be some rain this weekend, but surely I'll find some sun somewhere. ENJOY!

Happy 4th of July America!

Black Eyed Susans, Blue Skies and Queen Anne's Lace.

What more could you ask for on a summer day in Kentucky. Unfortunately, this isn't today but weeks ago while on a walk through the wildflower meadow at Bernheim. Today here in Kentucky, it's a rain drenched, dull dreary day for the 4th. Not to worry, the sun will come out again. Happy Fourth Everyone! ENJOY!

Image of Fall Past

A storm is on the horizon today. The winds are blowing in and blowing my pillows around on the patio floor. Soon the rain will begin and continue throughout the day and into the afternoon and evening. The sun is only barely peeking in and out of the heavy cloud cover.
Today seemed the perfect day to travel back to Fall in year's past. My journey through my archive began by traveling from Fall 2009 on to Fall 2010, and then on to last year, Fall 2011. Each year's Fall vastly different from the previous. By chance I stopped at this image from Fall 2011 where my journey ended. As this image captured my attention, I went back in my mind to the wildflower meadow of last year. So glad for the opportunity to remember those beautiful natural wood bird boxes, sitting in the wildflower meadow at Bernheim, before they were painted earlier this Spring in bright yellows and blues. And while I never discovered the why behind their brightly colored paint jobs, I am certain there must have been a very good reason. So I share this image with you right where my journey halted, just as this bird box stood in the meadow in the Fall of 2011, when the wildflowers were more plentiful in this meadow. Sadly this year only wildflowers along the parameter of the meadow survived the drought. Sad but true, time changes everything. What has time changed in your world. ENJOY!

Long Hot Summer

The wildflower meadow has seen better summers as is evidence of few wildflowers this year. It is a sad thing. Although American farmers obviously could complain more about their crops drying up in the dead heat of the hottest summer on record. Fall I'm waiting . . . ENJOY!

Yellow Coneflower

Oh, but my wish is coming true. The wildflower meadow at Bernheim is growing back and soon will be in full force. I give it a few more weeks to really be at it again. It's already showing promise. I so enjoyed walking that meadow last summer and bringing you images from my walks. Here's a sample of what's to come. Stay cool America. You can literally fry an egg on the sidewalk here in Kentuckiana today. ENJOY!
